Information Disorder in Times of the Covid-19 Pandemic:  Misinformaton, News Consumpton and Fact-Checking in Türkiye

In one of our weekly meetings during the pandemic, we decided to conduct a research on this topic while discussing the misinformation that was being spread. We were wondering how the pandemic affected the information ecosystem in Türkiye during pandemic. We therefore approached Teyit.org, a non-profit fact-checking organization, with a research proposal. We created the sample, designed the survey, conducted the research and analyzed the collected data. Since the research was conducted during the pandemic period, we collected the data web-based.

Being representative of the population in Türkiye, we had 1025 internet users, invited through random sampling method. We attempted to see the self-reported sources of misinformation and to determine how the variables such as age, gender, education and socioeconomic status affect exposure to or belief in misinformation.

After producing the research report together with Teyit.org, we organized a webinar for the presentation of the report. In addition to the TANDANS team and the Teyit.org team, Evrim Kuran, who is especially known for her books on generational studies, took part in the webinar. This research, which we funded and designed, contributed to the literature by measuring misinformation, its dissemination and confirmation behaviors during the pandemic in Turkey.
